Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2026 - 50 Years Deadly

NAIDOC Week 2026 — 50 Years Deadly, 5–12 July 2026

NAIDOC Week is one of the most important celebrations on the Australian calendar. Held each year during the first full week of July, it is a time for all Australians to come together to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of the world's oldest living cultures.

NAIDOC Week 2026 runs from Sunday 5 July to Sunday 12 July.

The name NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, and its roots stretch back to the 1930s when Aboriginal activists began organising a Day of Mourning to draw attention to the rights and welfare of First Nations peoples. Today, NAIDOC Week has grown into a nationwide celebration of pride, identity, and resilience.

This Year's Theme: 50 Years Deadly

2026 marks a landmark milestone — 50 years of NAIDOC Week as we know it today. The theme "50 Years Deadly" honours five decades of celebration, advocacy, and cultural pride. "Deadly" in Aboriginal English means something is excellent, outstanding, or impressive - and 50 years of NAIDOC Week is exactly that.

This anniversary is a moment to reflect on how far the movement has come, to honour the Elders and activists who fought for recognition, and to look forward with pride and determination.

Keepsakes & Everyday Carry

Some of the most meaningful ways to honour NAIDOC Week are the small, everyday choices - the keyring you carry, the candle you light, the badge on your bag.

Fly the Flag - Literally

One of the most powerful acts of recognition during NAIDOC Week is flying the flags. The Aboriginal Flag, designed by Luritja man Harold Thomas in 1971, and the Torres Strait Islander Flag, designed by Bernard Namok in 1992, are symbols of identity, pride, and sovereignty.
