Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday

First Sunday in July

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday is a national Catholic observance coordinated by the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council. It celebrates the spirituality, cultures, gifts and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics within the life of the Church in Australia.

The date falls during NAIDOC Week. Each year's theme and liturgy resources are prepared by NATSICC, and celebrations should be guided by current First Nations Catholic resources and local Community relationships.

Ways to mark the date

  • Use NATSICC's current resource kit, liturgy guidance and educational activities.
  • Work respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics and local First Nations people, with proper recognition and support.
  • Ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander symbols, art, music and cultural expressions are used with permission and appropriate context.
