Harmony Day and Harmony Week
21 March
Harmony Day is marked on 21 March as part of Harmony Week, a national celebration of cultural diversity, inclusion, respect and belonging. The date is also the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Harmony activities can celebrate Australia's multicultural communities while also confronting racism. First Nations peoples are not simply another cultural group within multicultural Australia. Activities should recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of this continent, with distinct rights, histories and continuing connections to Country.
Ways to mark the date
- Celebrate the cultures and languages represented in your school, workplace or Community.
- Pair celebration with practical anti-racism learning and action.
- Include an accurate acknowledgement of First Nations history, rights and local Country without treating Harmony Day as a substitute for First Nations-specific learning.
