Indigenous Literacy Day

First Wednesday of September

Indigenous Literacy Day is an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, cultures and languages. It is produced and presented by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation in collaboration with First Nations Communities and the Sydney Opera House.

The day celebrates the diversity and strength of First Nations storytelling and language. Activities should centre Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors, storytellers and Community voices, and avoid deficit-based accounts of literacy.

Ways to mark the date

  • Use the Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s current film, livestream and learning resources.
  • Read and share books created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors and illustrators.
  • Support First Nations-led publishing, language revitalisation and Community literacy initiatives.
