Anniversary of Ken Wyatt Becoming the First Indigenous Cabinet Minister
29 May
29 May marks the anniversary of Ken Wyatt becoming Australia’s first Indigenous federal Cabinet minister in 2019. Sworn in as Minister for Indigenous Australians, he was also the first Indigenous person to hold the federal portfolio responsible for Indigenous affairs.
The appointment behind the anniversary
The Australian Government’s dated announcement records Wyatt’s swearing-in at Government House on 29 May 2019. Parliament’s service record lists his Cabinet membership and appointment as Minister for Indigenous Australians from that date.
This is the anniversary of entering Cabinet and taking responsibility for that portfolio. It should not be described as his first election to Parliament or his first ministerial appointment. Those earlier milestones occurred at different times.
Why Cabinet membership matters
Cabinet brings together senior ministers to consider major government policy and decisions. Holding a ministerial role and belonging to Cabinet are related but distinct responsibilities. Wyatt had held ministerial office before joining Cabinet in 2019.
Recognising that distinction makes the history more useful for learning about government. A description such as ‘first Indigenous Cabinet minister’ is more precise here than simply saying ‘first Indigenous minister’, which would assign an earlier achievement to the wrong year.
Representation and responsibility
Wyatt’s appointment brought a First Nations person into a position of responsibility for a portfolio long administered by non-Indigenous ministers. That was an important representational change, while the practical effects of policies remained matters for public scrutiny and debate.
An individual office-holder cannot stand for every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Political representation includes different experiences and viewpoints, both within Parliament and outside it. The anniversary can recognise the appointment without presenting agreement with every government policy as a condition of acknowledging its significance.
Ways to mark the anniversary
Use the date to learn the difference between Parliament, the ministry and Cabinet. Compare Wyatt’s 2010 election to the House with his 2019 appointment and consider how the responsibilities changed.
In a workplace or classroom, build a timeline using clearly labelled election and appointment dates. Read official biographies alongside First Nations accounts of political participation. This is a historical anniversary and should not imply that Wyatt still holds the office or that the existence of an Indigenous office-holder removes the need for community-led decision-making.
