National Sorry Day

26 May

National Sorry Day acknowledges Stolen Generations survivors, their families and descendants. It also marks the anniversary of the 1997 tabling of the Bringing them home report, which documented the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, Communities, Country, culture and language.

This is a day for truth, remembrance and action. Any activity should be trauma-aware, respect the authority and experiences of survivors, and avoid placing an expectation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to share personal stories.

Ways to mark the date

  • Use survivor-led resources from The Healing Foundation and Stolen Generations organisations.
  • Create a quiet and respectful opportunity for learning, reflection and acknowledgement.
  • Identify practical commitments that support healing, justice and implementation of outstanding recommendations.
