Anniversary of the Torres Strait Regional Authority

Anniversary tracker

1 July 1994

The Torres Strait Regional Authority was established on 1 July 1994. The anniversary recognises an important institution in the history of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal representation in the region.

Regional representation and self-determination

The Authority’s own thirtieth-anniversary account identifies its establishment date. Its history should be read alongside earlier Island Councillors’ organising and the continuing pursuit of greater control over regional affairs.

An institution in a longer movement

The TSRA operates under an elected Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal Board. Its establishment is a different milestone from the 1937 Councillors’ conference, the maritime strike and the Torres Strait Treaty.

Keeping those dates distinct helps explain that representation developed through successive efforts, rather than appearing fully formed in one reform. It also avoids treating an institution’s anniversary as the beginning of the communities it serves.

The date is shared with Coming of the Light and other entries in this calendar. Each has its own meaning. A grouped date card should allow people to explore them individually rather than merge cultural, religious and governmental histories into one event.

Reflecting and learning

Read a TSRA anniversary account alongside an earlier regional milestone. What changed in the institution, and which aspirations or responsibilities continued?

Start with the sources below and distinguish the original event from later interpretations and commemorations. When using this date in a classroom or workplace, allow time for questions and further reading. First Nations peoples have diverse histories and perspectives; this brief introduction does not speak for every community.
