Anniversary of the Uluṟu Handback

Anniversary tracker

26 October

On 26 October 1985, title to Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park was returned to Aṉangu Traditional Owners. The Handback followed decades of advocacy for recognition of Aṉangu rights and established joint management of the park.

For Aṉangu, Uluṟu and Kata Tjuṯa are living cultural landscapes governed by Tjukurpa. Marking the anniversary should centre Aṉangu voices, continuing connection to Country and the significance of land rights.

Ways to mark the date

  • Learn about the Handback through Aṉangu-informed park resources.
  • Discuss land rights, joint management and the responsibilities that come with visiting sacred Country.
